How do you know your living with an Alcoholic Partner?

“That’s the big question that not many know the answer to”.

Living with an alcoholic can be extremely taxing on your own wellbeing. This is especially true in the case of an alcoholic husband or wife and especially children. I know this personally in my parents’ home when I was growing up.

Also, I lived with one for five years. Many years ago, which drove me almost to insanity as AA – Alcoholics Anonymous defines anyone living with an alcoholic. If I did not experience living with alcoholism, I would never have become one of the best coach relationship Counsellors on the Sunshine Coast Queensland and across Australia.

Living with an alcoholic partner

It is difficult to live with an alcoholic partner and watch your relationship suffer. However, remember that you cannot force someone to seek help. Treatment is a decision that your loved one will need to make on their own.

All you can do as a partner is offer support and learn self-love and becoming overly invested in your alcoholic partner’s wellbeing and not your own may be defined as CODEPENDENCY which is a sickness, and this can be detrimental to your own mental health. Al-Anon a group for families trying to cope with an alcoholic, stresses this point and as previously mentioned, will provide you with tools to cope to look out for your own health and wellbeing too.

Your alcoholic partner getting better?

Hopefully your alcoholic partner is committed to getting better. However, recovery and alcohol detox are not often a straightforward path. Living with an alcoholic partner will likely be a tough time for you too, and even the strongest of relationships tend to suffer during alcohol rehab. I can confirm this after 26 years as a marriage relationship coach. It is important not to neglect your other relationships during this time, especially if children are involved and may be worth seeking support in the form of relationship counselling coaching from me. It is most likely your emotional state and reactions to your partner will seriously affect your children’s lives for life I assure you.

It is best removing yourself totally from that relationship.

My experience is they never change unless they go to Alcoholics Anonymous for life.
